World Pharmacists Day is September 25
September 25 is World Pharmacists Day, a day organized by WHO partner International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) to recognize and celebrate the crucial role that pharmacists play in building healthier communities everywhere. This year’s theme is “Pharmacists: Meeting global health needs.”
Pharmacists are often the first point of contact for health advice and primary health care, and they address the health needs of patients all over the world in many ways. Some of the ways pharmacists support patient health at the local and global level include:
- ensuring access to and providing guidance on essential medicines and medical devices
- providing expertise for patient care and public health
- promoting disease prevention by administering vaccines, conducting health screenings, educating patients, and helping to improve health literacy
- supporting public health campaigns
- participating in the research and development of new medicines
- leading in pharmacovigilance by ensuring the safety and efficacy of antibiotics and other medicines
- implementing greener ways of working and addressing the impacts of environmental factors on health
- advocating for policy changes that promote better health outcomes
- addressing regional and global health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic
