Veterinary drug information requires scientific content experts

About two-thirds of U.S. households own at least one pet — an all-time high — and total spending on veterinary care services in the past year exceeded $38 billion.1,2 With the global pet care industry poised to see an increase in growth of about 50% by the end of the decade, further expansion is expected.2 In addition to these types of companion animals, non-companion animals (food-producing animals, performance animals) also routinely receive veterinary care.3 An essential component of veterinary healthcare is the provision of veterinary drug product information.

Veterinary drug information aids in decision making and is used by veterinarians, community and veterinary pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians to ensure proper care of animals. Veterinary drug products undergo a rigorous review and approval process that parallels that of human drugs, in which the safety and efficacy of a product are validated.3 In cases of food-producing animals specifically, the safety of both humans and animals is taken into account. Guidelines for the treatment of veterinary patients are also derived from evidence in available published literature. With a shortage of drugs approved specifically for use in animals, veterinary clinicians often rely on the off-label use of medicines approved for humans.

Although veterinary medicine is a highly specialized field, regardless of the anatomic and physiologic differences of animals compared with humans, Med Communications’ highly trained pharmacists and PhDs with specializations in areas such as toxicology, medicinal chemistry, biomedical engineering, R & D, and pharmacology have valuable skills to offer veterinary pharmaceutical partners. Our extensive training and experience allow for the critical evaluation and interpretation of the published biomedical literature in addition to the development and review of scientific content materials. Examples of our service offerings that may be helpful to the veterinary medicine industry include:
